Downhill Racing

Downhill Racing

In downhill racing, skiers descend steep slopes, often reaching speeds well in excess of 100 km/h (62 mph). Race officials prepare the courses prior to races, grooming the snow and placing course markers, or gates, through which racers must pass to complete the race. For safety, competitors are required to wear helmets; to cut down on wind resistance, they wear tight-fitting suits and maintain a tucked position as often as possible, with poles shaped to curve around their body
